Mental Health Services
HEI takes a mental health and psychosocial (MHPSS) approach to its interventions, which calls for a shift from an excessive ‘pathology-focused’, trauma-based model of service delivery towards one that recognizes the resilience and agency in the refugee and asylum seeker population. Aligning with such a multi-disciplinary approach, HEI provides the following services:
- psychiatric assessment and treatment
- psychological and behavioral interventions in the form of counseling and psychotherapy,
- psychosocial support services, which facilitate access to information and services related to stressors such as health, livelihood, and arrest and detention,
- facilitated support groups for refugee patients with low social support, and
- treatment adherence support
Due to the uniqueness of its services, HEI receives referrals from Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), international bodies, NGOs, and healthcare facilities to provide mental health care for refugees and asylum seekers. Besides receiving referrals for services from partner organizations and CHWs, HEI is also able to identify hard-to-reach, isolated communities, such as those from Iraq and Yemen, as well as other vulnerable groups via a chain-referral method from community members who are already patients at HEI. Patients’ specific vulnerabilities are captured in the formal intake form, and incident reports are generated where experiences of torture or sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) are detected. HEI also practices the prioritization and triage of vulnerable patients to expedite their treatment where necessary.
